It’s been a long winter at The Missoulian Angler, and we haven’t posted many updates lately and thought it was time to update everyone on what’s going on at the Missoulian Angler and around Missoula.
Improving our tying selection, Christmas Island, current snow and water conditions, and more.
Christmas Island
We had another successful hosted trip down to Christmas Island(Kiritimati). Shop Manager Walker headed this group and did an awesome job. Dozens of species caught including but not limited to Bonefish, Triggerfish, GT’s, Bluefin Trevally, Golden Trevally, Black Tip Shark, Tuna and many more.
Everyone had a great time and can’t wait to get back!
Here are a few quotes from Walker and shop Staff Derek.

Derek
“The first thought that I had when I stepped onto the island was feeling like I stepped through a portal into some saltwater fishing wonderland.
Obviously the fishing was absolutely insane. But everything from start to finish was mind blowing.
The scenery, the hospitality, the wildlife, the crew, the weather. Everything was simply incredible.
Truly an adventure I will never forget.”

Walker
“Aside from the incredible fishing, having the opportunity to host such an amazing group of people is something I will always remember.
It’s hard to top the experience of exploring the backcountry of Christmas Island on your own. Its an adventure I will never forget.
The endless opportunities to target various species along with the kindness and laid back vibe of the local people make this a place I will always seek to return to.”
Tying Selection Improvement

We’ve been busy getting rid of old products and bringing in many new ones. The Missoulian Angler has always been the tying shop in town going back to the original days of Paul Kohler ownership who was a great tier with a great tying selection. We take great pride in offering the newest and greatest in fly tying products and knowledge.
We’ve hired a new staff member Tom Lattourelle who is one of the most knowledgeable fly tiers we’ve come across. Tom has guided for us the past few years and will continue to run some trips for us, but he is turning much of his focus into managing our tying section. Tom has really improved the tying selections in his first few months here and we are excited to see what he has in store for years to come. Come check out our new and improved tying selection. And much more to come.

Current Conditions
Well, after a pretty dismal December and January snow precipitation, February came through big for our western Montana snowpack. We’ve added some good snowpack to our mountains lately. As like most years, we expect more mountain snow to come in March and April. But for now, we’re at a much better place than we have been over the last couple year for this time of year.
It’s also been a really cold February with plenty of single digit and below zero temperatures. This has forced many year round anglers to bust out the ice augers and hit their favorite lake to go ice fishing, and start tying flies for the anticipation of a great spring of fly fishing. Warmer spring weather has started and the rivers are starting to fish better and better every day. We’re getting a few reports over the last couple weeks of some decent fishing and even a few fish coming up to eat dries. Still mostly a nymph and streamer game, but we are starting to see a few adult Skwalas around and a few fish eating dries. The dry fly fishing should continue to improve in the coming weeks.
In addition to the Skwala hatch, there is the March Brown, Nemoura and BWO hatch that will be present. Our prolific spring hatches combined with some great dry fly fishing that accompanies these hatches is why Missoula has such a great early spring fishery.
March and April isn’t just a great time for dry flies in Missoula, but the streamer fishing is some of the best of the year.
